Domaines et Vins de Propriété - Bourgogne
ESTATE
Domain BERTHENET is situated in Montagny-lès- Buxy, in the heart of the Buxy hills, in a nice house owned by the family for several generations. Montagny-lès-Buxy is the nicest medieval fortified village in the Côte châlonnaise area. This village is renowned worldwide for its golden rock which paves the most famous streets and places around the world (ie : the Carroussel du Louvre in Paris). The narrow streets and the vinyards of Montagny-lès-Buxy go down from the center of the village to a deep valley, offering a beautiful panorama on the Côte châlonnaise region.
VINE GROWERS
The BERTHENET family have been vine-growers and farmers for 4 centuries. Jean-Pierre bought his first plot in 1974 : it was an old non-trellised vineyard, pruned using the « gobelet » method that it was only possible to cultivate by hand. After a few years, Jean-Pierre bought a 15-hectares area of forest and farmland, that he gradually brought into cultivation. In order to obtain better wines, he chose to plant quality grapes giving low yields.
WINE MAKING
Because he had a passion for terroir and vine, Jean-Pierre became a pioneer of sustainable farming. He encouraged natural growing, few treatment, weed in the vineyard, slight ploughing, no green harvest…mécanical harvest without de-stemming.
Untill 2001, Jean-Pierre had his wines vinified by the cooperative winery of Buxy. In 2002, he chose to become independant and to build its own winery in order to vinify his wines himself, what is quite unusal in Montagny.
