Domaines et Vins de Propriété - Bourgogne
ESTATE
The Jean Fournier domaine is one of the oldest in the village of Marsannay-la-Côte. There is written evidence of a winegrower named Fournier dating back to the reign of Louis XIII.
Today, Jean Fournier and his family manage nearly 16 hectares of vines located on the best terroirs of Marsannay (mainly red, but also rosé and white) and Gevrey-Chambertin. All of their wines have strong personalities, which is due to the fact that the grapes come from old vines (up to 60 years old) and undergo an often long ageing process (sometimes up to 3 years). This technique enables them to produce full, bold, powerful wines - Burgundies that can be cellared for many years.
VINE GROWERS
In 2003, Jean Fournier put his son Laurent, who is part of Marsannay's new generation of winegrowers, in charge of the domaine. He is young and passionate: he innovates, runs tests, experiments with organic agriculture and vinification without de-stemming, and is moving back to manual harvesting. His objective is to produce healthy grapes while respecting nature and the environment.
WINE MAKING
Traditional Burgundian methods of winemaking allow the complexity of the terroir and the vintage to shine through in these wines.
Only the ripe grapes are selected and the harvest is sorted twice, both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentations are long (up to 3 weeks) and use some traditional methods. The ageing process is rather unique as both traditional and large (from 20 to 50 hl) barrels are used, allowing the wine to affirm its power and open up slowly.
The domaine also produces excellent rosés from Marsannay, but the jewel of its collection is indisputably the "Clos du Roy".
